Mayor Gavin Newsom inspires students, civic leaders in San Diego
CHULA VISTA (04/12/08) - San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom received a warm San Diego welcome
on a bright, sunny Saturday afternoon. Even for a short time, Mayor Newsom has endeared himself to the
youth, young professionals and community leaders of Chula Vista and Southern San Diego not only with his
beguiling presence but with his vision and the things that he has done and achieved, largely benefiting the
immigrants and other underserved sectors of his city.
He shares the ideals and concerns of the Latino and Chicano communities, and for that the Mayor was warmly
embraced by the community, led by the Chicano Democratic Association, headed by its president, Ricardo
Flores, who hosted the event.
On hand to welcome Mayor Newsom was Southwestern College Governing Board Member Yolanda Salcido
and civic leaders who came to hear first hand what the popular Mayor has to say on various issues, including
Jose Preciado, Devonna Almagro, Auday Arabo and Todd Gloria.
Latino broadcaster and founder of Border Angels Enrique Morones graced the event and acknowledged the
Mayor’s efforts in favor of illegal immigrants. He cited how through Mayor Gavin’s initiative, San Francisco
became the first city in the United States to declare itself as a ‘safe haven’ for illegal immigrants.
Mayor Newsom shared with the audience the things that he values and how he does things.
“Immigration is an issue than is close to me. My message to you has been echoed in my world - our San
Francisco world, and it’s a reality-based world - that in our city, illegal immigrants are safe. But more than that
are other issues that we promote - health care, poverty, the homeless.
“We advance these issues not only for the changes that we want to see, but to really commit to real pragmatic
solutions,” Mayor Newsom said.
He continued, “This is me - I say privately what I say publicly. I say what I believe. I am fully expressive of
my points of view. True we make mistakes, but that does not mean we will not take the risks anymore. The
risk-averse politicians try to calculate (the risk) to be able to stay. But I believe what we should look for are
veracity, integrity and preparedness.”
Mayor Newsom reported that San Francisco has the 2nd lowest unemployment rate in 50 years yet it has the
highest general fund reserve; providing health care to everybody.
“I tell you, it’s cheaper when you do the right thing. Thus you demand that from your local officials,” the
Mayor said, giving inspiration and encouragement to all the attendees, young and old alike.
