San Diego’s Christian ministers show up to listen to and
support Auday Arabo
SAN DIEGO (04/16/08) – “I believe it is time for change, change should happen
now in California. And although no one has all the answers for all our concerns, I
know that with his good spirit and energy, he will end up making good decisions
(for us) and can speak loudly in Sacramento. Hence it is my pleasure to publicly
share my sincere support for Auday Arabo for the 78th District Assembly seat. I’
m in it to win it,” said Pastor Reginald Gary of New Creation Baptist Church as
he welcomed the attendees to a luncheon meeting to listen to, and support Auday
Arabo.
Held on April 16 at Tom Ham’s Lighthouse on Harbor Island Drive, the meeting
was attended by several Christian pastors and ministers in San Diego and
community leaders. Leading the attendees, though, were Arabo’s staunch
supporters, former California Senator Wadie Deddeh and former Congressman
Jim Bates.
Congressman Bates said that he sees in Auday someone “who wants to solve the
problems especially in these exciting times” while Senator Deddeh takes pride
that he mentored Auday from his teen years, all the way to getting a college
degree, to taking up law which landed him a job at the District Attorney’s Office.
“And I know that he will become a faithful servant of the people,” Deddeh said.
Reverend Willie Manley of Greater Life Baptist Church led the invocation,
where he indicated that a leader’s heart and mind should be in the right place.
Meanwhile, Kathleen Harmon, a distinguished community advocate and church
leader, pointed to Arabo as someone who “stands with us on the platform of one-
man-one-woman, especially now that petitions are being made to ensure the
sanctity of marriage. We should not send somebody to Sacramento who will
wrench our children and homes. And I know that Auday will listen as many
candidates don’t listen.”
She then asked the ministers to help elect Auday by participating in phone-
calling and precint-walking. Harmon herself is a candidate for the Central
Committee and the campaign manager for Vickie Butcher who is running for the
52nd Congressional District.
Auday Arabo was clearly elated and ‘humbled’ at the meeting’s turn-out, for
honorable and respectable Christian leaders were willing to listen to what he had
to say, and many have actually indicated support for his candidacy.
Arabo admitted that the competition is tough. And knowing that divine help is
as much important, he visited a couple of Christian churches the previous Sunday
and enjoyed and was refreshed by the experience. “And I am very proud to be a
Christian,” he declared.
He continued, “Nothing in life that’s good comes easy. Hence with new energy
and new leadership, I press on to bring new hope to the community, that when
somebody is in trouble, he knows that he has an elected official as a resource to
fix the problem. I have just attended a protest rally on the 10% cut on the budget
for education. I believe that a leader sets priorities, and it’s clear that one thing
that we cannot cut is education.”
Arabo said that as he goes knocking at door after door, asking people what they
need and are important to them, listening to what they have to say, he vowed to
bring the government and its services back to the people. “At the end of the day,
it is being a public servant that is important; it’s not about me or what I feel – it’
s about the people that we serve,” he said.
In closing, Arabo said to the ministers, “I am thrilled that you are with me, and
I’m in your prayers. You’ve been an inspiration to me, as you are the true
leaders of the community.”
